Test Description and clinical significance
Probes
Her-2/Neu (gastric)
Disease:
breast, ovarian, bladder, pancreatic, and stomach cancers
thatMeasures the amount of HER2/neu protein on cancer cells or how many copies of the HER2/neu gene are in the DNA of cancer cells . The HER2/neu protein helps control normal cell growth. Larger than normal amounts of the HER2/neu protein or too many copies of the HER2/neu gene may be made by some types of cancers. HER-2/neu is the most important amplified oncogene in gastric cancer. determination of HER2 status is crucial in order to select patients with advanced gastric cancer who may benefit from HER2 molecular targeted therapy. Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) is regarded to be the gold standard for HER2/neu evaluation
Specimen Requirements
Collection:
Block, Unstained, formalin-fixed slides. Two (2) slides for FISH testing and one (1) additional for pathological evaluation.
Stability:
Indefinitely
Unacceptable Conditions:
Unlabeled specimen/Decalcified tissue/Insuffcient tissue fixation
Storage & Transport
Room Temperature Include cold pack in extreme heat. Specimens subject to HER2 (ERBB2) testing should be fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin for at least six hours and up to 72 hours. The volume of formalin should be at least 10 times the volume of the specimen. Specimens should be immersed in fixative within one hour of the biopsy or resection. Include cold ischemic time and fixation time on requisition. Include cold pack in extreme heat.
